Prognosis is looking good for injured local soldier (Andrew Bouwma)

Andrew Bouwma, the young soldier from Racine, is doing better, his grandmother Clora Justvig reports.

Bouwma was wounded in Iraq Aug. 3. after which he was transported to a military hospital in Germany for treatment. He's been at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C., since early August.

The Horlick High School grad celebrated his 21st birthday Aug. 20, with visits from his grandparents and other family members, Justvig said.

He also got to go out for a ride and the nurses arranged for him to have a little cake, she said.

On Monday, Justvig reported, that "today Drew is stable and alert. He no longer is in any intensive care and does not have a surgery scheduled! He is eating food and was going to watch the Packers on TV with his brother who is there. We're looking forward to progress from this point on."
