Marine who saved platoon a humble hero


FITCHBURG— Marine Corps Sgt. Michael P. Connors doesn’t like the limelight.

Even as he was being recognized by his home city yesterday for receiving the Bronze Star Medal, one of the highest honors awarded to individual soldiers for valor under fire, Sgt. Connors said the Marines who fought beside him during his tours of duty in Iraq deserve the same recognition.

"Marines fight for the Marine to the left and the right of them," said Sgt. Connors, 27, who has been in the Marine Corps for eight and a half years. "I’m grateful for the medal, but I really don’t think I deserve it."
