Dave Lubach column: Family deals with reality of Iraq war

Sometime during the next few weeks, Brent Navis will be off to Iraq to serve his country.

Navis, 37, knew this day might come when he signed up for the Navy reserves, four months after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

He's proud to serve his country and put his life on the line to protect it.

Of course, Navis is making a huge personal sacrifice to help keep the world safe from terrorism. He will miss at least a year of his high-school age sons, Jay, 17, and Justin, 15, growing up.

"It tears me apart," he said recently, before shipping out to Kuwait, where he's preparing for his duties in Iraq. "I'm not going to get home for Jay's high school graduation, which rips me apart. But they've stood up and been mature the last few weeks, and they're prepared well for that kind of stuff."
