Marine who survived one attack killed days later (Ryan E. Miller)

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A Marine who called his parents last week to tell them how he survived an attack on his Humvee in Iraq was killed days later when his vehicle struck an explosive devise, his family said.

Lance Cpl. Ryan Miller, 21, of Columbus, was part of an operation working to drive insurgents out of an area of Iraq rarely traversed by troops, his family said. He was killed Sunday.

Miller was two months into his second tour in Iraq, and he felt more danger this time around, his family said. He first left for the war in February 2004 and came back that September.

He called home Aug. 29 to tell his family about surviving an attack where his Humvee was damaged by a land mine.

"He said, 'Boy, we're really lucky, Dad,'" said his father, Ed Miller.

He told his family not to worry, and his mother, Mary Miller, said that was the last time they spoke to him. Two Marines came to the Millers' home to notify them of his death Sunday evening.

Miller planned to go to college and work in law enforcement after the Marines.
