U.S. raids suspected safe houses in search for missing; Search may move into Anbar; 8 replacements for killed-missing arrive at platoon

BAGHDAD -- U.S. soldiers raided suspected safehouses near the Euphrates River south of Baghdad on Monday in their search for three comrades captured by insurgents linked to al-Qaida but found them empty after the militants apparently were tipped off and fled, an official said...

Maj. Webster Wright, a spokesman for the 10th Mountain Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team, also said some 27 air assaults had been staged in the last nine days, dropping off soldiers to gain the element of surprise and to avoid the bomb-studded roads...

He said it was looking at targets to the west of the division's area of operations. He wasn't more specific, but that would likely include the volatile Anbar province, a vast desert area that stretches to the borders of Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia...

Meanwhile, the platoon that was decimated by the attack on a stationary observation outpost near the village of Qarghouli began to regroup, receiving eight replacements for those who were killed or captured.
