40 Guard Members Head For Border Patrol
DES MOINES, Iowa -- With the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the horizon, more Iowa soldiers are preparing to be deployed.
But this time, they're not being ordered to Iraq. They applied and volunteered to go to San Diego, where they will reinforce the Mexican border.
NewsChannel 8 talked with some of the 40 National Guard members who are headed south.
Some of the Iowans will build roads. Others will repair military vehicles. They said they probably won't have to worry about bombs.
Soldiers preparing to leave their families are not supposed to smile. Before Spc. Shane Wheatley went to Iraq, he said the day felt like a funeral.
"Before going overseas, it's like a ton of people grieving that they're going to be leaving their families, their kids, their relatives. Everything they've known," he said.
