Iranian Troops Arrest 5 From Iraqi Security Forces on Border

BAGHDAD, Sept. 8 — Five members of the Iraqi security forces and their interpreter were arrested by Iranian troops as the Iraqis were patrolling the Iraq-Iran border this week, an Interior Ministry spokesman said Friday.

The Iraqis were on a joint patrol run by the Interior and Defense ministries, said the spokesman, Muhammad al-Askari, and were seized near the town of Mandali, in Diyala Province. The area has been rife with sectarian violence.

It was unclear which side of the border the Iraqis were on.

This is not the first time in recent years that Iran has arrested foreign troops for operating near its border. In June 2004, Iran seized three British naval boats and detained eight sailors as the boats were patrolling in the waters straddling the Iraq-Iran border in the south. The sailors were eventually released.
