Report: Heaviest mortar attack on 'green zone' in weeks

Militants fired a spate of mortar bombs at Baghdad's Green Zone on Tuesday in one of the heaviest attacks in weeks on the heavily fortified compound that houses the U.S. embassy and Iraqi government offices.
It was unclear if there were any casualties from the barrage of around 10 mortar bombs. Reuters reporters could see several plumes of smoke rising from the compound on the west side of the Tigris River.
Loud sirens warning people to take cover echoed across the zone.
The Green Zone is Baghdad's most secure area but often comes under rocket and mortar attack by militants in other parts of the city. The strikes have lately become more frequent and more accurate.
