St. Cloud professor returning to Iraq to help rebuilding
ST. CLOUD, Minn. - St. Cloud State University professor Abbas Mehdi has taken a leave of absence for up to two years to return to Iraq to help rebuild his homeland.
"Iraq is dying right now, slowly, and we have to stop the death process," Mehdi said Tuesday before leaving. "This is not an easy decision. It could cost me my life. It could cost me a lot of things. But my country needs help."
Mehdi, 56, a professor of sociology and anthropology, said Tuesday he's not sure how long he will be in Iraq, where he'll work as a strategy and policy adviser to the Iraqi government.
"It depends on many factors," he said. "There is more destruction and many more problems. But there is still hope, and hopefully we'll be able to contribute."
