Guard member from Lawrenceburg dies from non-combat injury in Iraq (Charles Jason Jones)
FRANKFORT, Ky. — A Kentucky National Guard soldier from Lawrenceburg has died in Iraq, officials said Thursday.
Sgt. 1st Class Charles Jason Jones, 29, died Wednesday in Baghdad, according to a statement from the guard.
Officials have said he died of a non-combat related injury. In a statement Thursday, they said: “The Kentucky National Guard does not have any additional information surrounding Jones’ death at this time.”
Jones was assigned as a medic to the 149th Brigade Combat Team Headquarters. The unit’s 50 soldiers deployed to Iraq earlier this year and has teams stationed throughout Iraq.
Jones is the 12th member of the Kentucky National Guard to die in the “Global War on Terror,” according to the statement.
He is the first to die of non-combat related injuries for the Kentucky Guard, according to the statement.
Jones joined the Kentucky National Guard in 1993 at 17 and graduated from South Laurel High School in London, Ky. in 1994, officials said. Before to deploying to Iraq, Jones was a full-time Kentucky National Guard soldier stationed in Frankfort, officials said.
