Thomas L. Hilbert dies 'from wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations'

A soldier from Venus was killed in Iraq when a bomb detonated near his vehicle, according to the Department of Defense.

Spc. Thomas L. Hilbert, 20, was one of three soldiers from Fort Bliss who fell victim to the attack in Mosul. Venus is about 30 miles from Dallas.

The bomb went off Thursday. Hilbert died on Friday, the defense department said.
