BAGHDAD - U.S. and Iraqi troops killed 33 insurgents in an airborne assault and air strikes north of Baghdad in an operation to reopen a major irrigation canal that had been seized by gunmen, the U.S. military said on Tuesday.

KIRKUK - Gunmen opened fire and wounded a policeman and his wife inside their car in northern city of Kirkuk, police said.

MAHAWEEL - Gunmen opened fire on Shi'ite pilgrims, wounding two in Mahaweel, 70 km (45 miles) south of Baghdad on Monday, police said.

KERBALA - At least six people were killed in clashes between pilgrims and police in the holy Shi'ite city of Kerbala on Monday night, police said.

MUSSAYAB - Gunmen killed a policeman and wounded his brother in Mussayab, 60 km (40 miles) south of Baghdad, on Monday night, police said.
