After completing several certification exercises, the Kearsarge Expeditionary Strike Group leaves here Monday to begin a regularly scheduled deployment to “deny terrorists use of the maritime environment,” among other missions. They’re part of the ongoing rotation of “forward-deployed forces,” likely in the waters of the Middle East, although the Navy does not provide a destination.

The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit will embark with the strike group.

According to information provided by 2nd Fleet, the amphibious assault ship Kearsarge and the amphibious transport dock Ponce leave Norfolk on Monday. The dock landing ship Gunston Hall departs Little Creek on Monday. The destroyer Porter and the frigate Carr will leave Norfolk to join the strike group Aug. 1. Also joining the strike group will be the attack submarine Miami, based in Groton, Conn., and the cruiser Vicksburg, home-ported in Mayport, Fla.
