June 22, 2007:

BAGHDAD - A U.S. soldier was killed during combat operations in southwestern Baghdad on Thursday, the military said.

FALLUJA - A suicide bomber killed two people and wounded four when he blew himself up in a telecommunications office in Falluja, 50 km (32 miles) west of Baghdad, police said.

FALLUJA - Four people were killed and 48 wounded in an explosion on Thursday evening in a shop in Falluja, police said.

BAGHDAD - One policeman was killed and another wounded by a roadside bomb hidden near a body lying in the street in Karrada in central Baghdad on Thursday, police said. Police had gone to investigate the body when the bomb exploded.

BAGHDAD - U.S. soldiers detained 18 suspected insurgents during three raids in northwestern Baghdad on Thursday, the U.S. military said. Weapons and other equipment were also seized.

BAGHDAD - Police said they had recovered 15 bodies from different areas of Baghdad in the past 24 hours.

BASRA - Two security detainees at the U.S.-run detention facility Camp Bucca in southern Iraq died after suffering heart attacks, the U.S. military said. The first died on Thursday while being transferred from another camp. The second had been severely wounded in a mortar attack on Camp Bucca and died on Friday.

KUFA - Gunmen killed a police officer and his wife in a drive-by shooting in Kufa, 160 km (100 miles) south of Baghdad, police said.

HILLA - A car bomb killed two people and wounded 18 in the Shi'ite city of Hilla, south of Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD - Four U.S. soldiers were killed and an Iraqi interpreter wounded when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle northwest of Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

BAGHDAD - A U.S. airman died when his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in Tikrit, 175 km (110 miles) north of Baghdad, the military said.

BAGHDAD - Iraqi troops killed five militants spotted placing a roadside bomb near a bridge in the al-Khatoon district of Baquba on Wednesday, the U.S. military said.

BAGHDAD - Two U.S. soldiers were killed and three wounded when their unit was hit by a roadside bomb and then came under small arms fire in eastern Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

KHALIS - U.S. and Iraqi forces killed 11 al Qaeda gunmen on Wednesday after an attack on an Iraqi army checkpoint near Khalis, 80 km (50 miles) north of Baghdad, the U.S. military said. Attack helicopters were called in after the gunmen fired on the checkpoint.

BAGHDAD - Iraqi special forces detained a key Mehdi Army leader during an early-morning raid in Baghdad's Sadr City district on Friday, the U.S. military said.

SAMARRA - Three police commandos and one gunman were killed in clashes in Samarra, 100 km (62 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD - Three people were killed and two wounded in a mortar attack in the Bayaa district of southwestern Baghdad, police said.

MUSSAYAB - A roadside bomb targeting a police patrol killed one policeman and wounded two others in Mussayab, about 60 km (40 miles) south of Baghdad, police said.

ISKANDARIYA - A roadside bomb killed one policeman and wounded two others when it exploded near a police convoy in Iskandariya, 40 km (25 miles) south of Baghdad, police said.

TIKRIT - U.S. soldiers conducting raids against al Qaeda killed two men in a car which ignored orders to stop on a road near Tikrit, the U.S. military said. A bomb was found in the car, which was then destroyed by a U.S. air strike.

FALLUJA - A U.S. air strike killed five gunmen who had opened fire on a patrol near Falluja, 50 km (32 miles) west of Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

BAGHDAD - Police found 11 bodies on the streets of Baghdad on Friday.

NAJAF - Gunmen killed a police officer and wounded two of his bodyguards on the road between Najaf and the nearby town of Kufa on Friday. Najaf is 160 km (100 miles) south of Baghdad.

FALLUJA - Gunmen killed Ahmed Jasim, deputy chairman of the sports committee in the local council of Falluja, on Friday, police said.

KIRKUK - Police said they found a body on Friday showing signs of torture in Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north of Baghdad.
