Navy offers reservists $15,000 re-enlistment bonus for switching rates

Navy Reservists who switch to undermanned, high-deployment ratings are now eligible for re-enlistment bonuses of up to $15,000 — and they could earn an additional $7,200 for college while they serve, under a new Navy policy announced Wednesday.
“It’s not for anybody and everybody,” said Paul Dowd, director of education and training programs for the Navy Reserve. “If they are serving in an overmanned rate, this gives them an opportunity to transition into a critical-needs rate and get a bonus for doing it. It gives them the incentive to change ratings.”
The Navy Reserve has for years paid bonuses of as much as $20,000 to active-duty sailors who change to critical-needs ratings; to civilians who enlist in critical-needs ratings; and reservists already serving in critical-needs ratings who re-enlist in those same ratings. But this is the first time that bonuses have been paid to reservists to change from overmanned ratings such as yeoman and culinary specialist.
