Kuwait says it won’t allow U.S. attack on Iran from territory

Kuwait is the home to the US Army Forces Central Command and the Coalition Forces Land Component Command, which together control all military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Kuwait recently announced that it has stockpiled food and taken other precautionary measures in case of a U.S. attack on Iran. The island nation of Bahrain has also announced preparations for a U.S.-Iran conflict, including holding the largest mass casualty drill ever. Bahrain is home to Naval Forces Central Command and is home base for the 5th Fleet, responsible for naval forces in the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Arabian Sea and coast off East Africa as far south as Kenya.

KUWAIT CITY — The defense minister of this major U.S. ally said Monday that Kuwait will not allow the American military to stage an attack on Iran from its territory...

This small oil-rich country has been an ally of Washington since the U.S.-led 1991 Gulf War that liberated it from a seven-month Iraqi occupation under Saddam Hussein. It was the launch pad for the 2003 invasion of Iraq that toppled Hussein, and it remains a vital logistics base for coalition forces serving there.

On Sunday, the Iranian parliament speaker said during a visit to Kuwait it was unlikely Washington would attack his country over the nuclear standoff. Asked how Tehran would respond if the U.S. military used its bases in the Gulf in such an attack, Gholam Ali Haddad Adel said “we would have to defend ourselves and it would be normal to respond in kind against that ... base if the Islamic republic is targeted.”
