Report: Turkish tanks carry out exercises at Iraq border

Thirty tanks under the command of a tank battalion stationed at the pilgrim accommodation facilities in Şırnak's Silopi district carried out a military maneuver in the region on Thursday.

Leaving their units, they traveled to the village of Aktepe, five kilometers from the Iraqi border, where they carried out a number of training activities before returning to their units. Land Forces Commander Gen. İlker Başbuğ stated that he saw determination in the eyes of his soldiers from the lowest rank to the highest. "We have been seriously intimidating the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists. The terrorists admit that this pressure on them is as heavy as the one we had on them between 1994 and 1998," he said, citing communications surveillance of PKK leaders.
