General Dempsey: Technology alone cannot stop bombers
BAGHDAD — An Army officer said Sunday that the coalition has no technology capable of detecting all suicide bombers before they strike, and that the only solution is for Iraqi forces, government officials and civilians to work together to stop the terrorist cells that plan such attacks while hiding in populated areas.
“The unfortunate reality of suicide bombers is that there is no ... magic formula for solving that problem. There is no technological solution that will guarantee that we can prevent ... either a suicide bomber or a suicide car bomber from entering into the populated areas,” said Lt. Gen. On Saturday, Iraqi Interior Ministry spokesman Brig. Abdul-Karim Khalaf said that new explosives detectors will soon be used on the streets of Baghdad in an effort to stop terrorist attacks aimed at civilians.
