Daniel E. Woodcock dies of wounds suffered from explosion
FORT BRAGG, N.C. - A paratrooper from Alaska was killed last weekend in a bombing while he patrolled in Iraq, the 82nd Airborne Division said Tuesday.
Sgt. Daniel E. Woodcock, 25, from Glennallen, died from wounds he received when a bomb exploded Sunday near Dawr, Iraq, the division said. Woodcock was an infantry team leader and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.
"Sergeant Woodcock was an outstanding team leader who continually put the welfare of his troopers before his own," said Staff Sgt. Norberto Ruiz of Woodcock's unit. "He was a very dedicated father and spouse." Woodcock joined the Army in July 2000 and entered the 82nd in January 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Alida, son, Gabriel, and daughter, Charlotte, all of Fayetteville, N.C. His parents, Calvin and Linda Woodcock, live in Glennallen.
Funeral arrangements are pending. A memorial service will be held by his unit in Iraq.
