Four suspects arrested in Karbala ambush

Masked Iraqi soldiers on patrol in Karbala

Four men have been detained for suspected involvement in Saturday’s attack on the Karbala provincial joint coordination center in which five U.S. soldiers and several Iraqis were killed, the Army announced Tuesday.

Iraqi army troops, Multi-National Division-Baghdad soldiers and a special Iraqi police unit from Hillah teamed up to detain the four insurgents Monday, following a tip from a Karbala resident, according to a Multi-National Corps-Iraq press release.

U.S. forces included paratroopers with 2nd Battalion, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, the release said.

The suspects were found in a house near the area where vehicles used in the attack were abandoned after insurgents made their getaway from the scene.

Iraqi officials said Sunday that the gunmen who attacked the provincial headquarters in the Shiite holy city, about 50 miles south of Baghdad, were wearing military uniforms and drove up in black sport utility vehicles commonly used by foreign dignitaries — an apparent attempt to impersonate Americans.
