Life goes on in Iraq despite the continuing violence. Couples still meet and fall in love. Families still celebrate when couples come together in marriage.
But what was once a boisterous affair, characterized by large parties, loud music and cries of joy, are now subdued, almost clandestine, events. In areas where radical Muslim militants hold sway, the bride and groom are more likely to opt for a traditional Islamic wedding to avoid potential problems.
Those who can afford it prefer to take their marriage vows abroad, where what should be a happy occasion is less likely to be interrupted by a car bombing or gunfire.
