James Chamroeun laid to rest

Fulton County’s first marine killed in the line of duty was laid to rest Friday afternoon.

Lance Corporal James Chamroeun was only 20-years-old when he died last week during combat operations in Iraq after his vehicle ran over a makeshift bomb

The private funeral service ended Friday afternoon.

Chamroeun completed a tour of duty in Afghanistan before he was moved to Iraq. Chamroeun was home on leave just in Union City just three weeks before he died.

Chamroeun reportedly told his 15-year-old brother, Joel, not to join the military because he didn’t want him to see the violence and death of war.

Chamroeun joined the Marines because he wanted to serve his country and he was remembered as a quiet young man with a quick sense of humor.

Chamroeun’s family was joined by military people, both active and retired, who praised Chamroeun’s strength.

“There is a level of commitment that’s impeccable. We’ve lost a great fallen soldier, a leader in the community and he’s going to be highly missed. Many have laid down their lives right now, even right now for our country, our communities and we just need to keep them lifted in prayer. Families and all,” said funeral attendee Dr. Lareese Howell.

After the funeral service, the funeral procession headed for Canton, where Chamroeun was to be buried.
