Security Summary: August 6, 2007

Above: A man is treated for burns after a car bomb killed at least 9 in Baghdad today.

BAGHDAD - Seventeen bodies were found around Baghdad, police said.

TAL AFAR - A truck bomb killed at least 33 people and wounded 52 others when it exploded in a Shi'ite district of the northern town of Tal Afar, police said. At least 10 homes were flattened by the blast.

BAQUBA - Police said they found 60 decomposed bodies in a thicket close to a village near Baquba north of Baghdad on Sunday.

KIRKUK - Police said three policemen were wounded in a firefight with Western security contractors 25 km (15 miles) southwest of Kirkuk in northern Iraq.

SALAHUDDIN - U.S. forces said they killed 11 insurgents and detained 10 suspects during combat operations targeting al Qaeda in Iraq. Seven were killed in an air strike east of Balad.

BAGHDAD - A roadside bomb concealed in rubbish killed six people and wounded 10 when it blew up in the southern Baghdad neighbourhood of Jisr Diyala as street cleaners were sweeping the road, police said.

BAGHDAD - A bomb in a bus killed two people and wounded nine others, including women and children, in Baghdad's eastern Shi'ite neighbourhood of Ghadir, police said.

BAGHDAD - One U.S. soldier was killed and two others wounded in combat in eastern Baghdad on Sunday, the U.S. military said.

SHIRQAT - Police found the bodies of five Iraqi soldiers in the northern town of Shirqat, police said.

HILLA - Gunmen killed a police commando outside his home on Sunday in the central Iraqi city of Hilla, 100 km (62 miles) south of Baghdad, police said.

HAWIJA - Police said they found the bodies of two people near the town of Hawija, north of Baghdad.
