Jonathan M. Rossi dies 'of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device and small arms fire'

A soldier from Safety Harbor has been killed in Iraq.

The Defense Department late Monday announced the death of Pfc. Jonathan M. Rossi, 20.

The department said he died Sunday in Baghdad of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device and small arms fire.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.

Spec. Rossi was an infantryman who entered the Army from Tampa in June 15, 2005.

He was posthumously awarded the bronze Star and Purple Heart medals.

Rossi's father, Michael, says his son was a talented artist who designed the logo for his company batallion. He says Rossi joined the military because he loved to travel.
