Adam G. Herold dies 'of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device'
A 23-year-old Omaha Roncalli High School graduate was killed in Iraq over the weekend, sources told KETV NewsWatch 7 on Monday.
Adam Herold was killed in action, his uncle, Bob Herold, said. He died after an explosion in Karbala. Three American soldiers were killed Sunday in the suicide bombing of a bridge outside Baghdad, but there's no confirmation yet that Adam Herold was one of those soldiers.
Herold's family was notified at about 9 p.m. Sunday by a chaplain and an Army officer. Bob Herold said Adam Herold's family is overcome with grief.
Adam Herold's parents, Lance and Debra, are still waiting on information about what happened, Bob Herold said.
Bob Herald said his nephew was engaged and had recently come home over Christmas for a surprise visit to the family.
"This is a very close, close-knit family," said family friend Dave Ogden. "They've been such a precious part of my family's life and there's just no words to describe this."
Ogden said he knew Adam Herold since the day he was born.
Ogden said Adam Herold was the youngest of three boys.
"Just a wonderful kid, cheerful and it's just going to be impossible to fill this hole in everybody's lives," Ogden said.
