Security Summary: May 5, 2007

Baghdad- At least six people were wounded in a mortar attack in Baghdad, while 11 unidentified bodies were found during the past 24 hours in different parts of the Iraqi capital, an Interior Ministry source said on Saturday.

Basra- At least five people were wounded when four Katyusha rockets slammed into a residential area in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, while security forces freed a female captive in the city, a police source said on Saturday.

Balad- Unknown gunmen shot dead a police lieutenant-colonel near Balad town, 90 km north of Baghdad, while Iraqi and U.S. forces detained ten suspected militants in the town, a security source said on Saturday.

Mosul- Three gunmen were killed on Saturday when they attacked an Iraqi army base in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, a security source said.

Basra- British forces wounded six gunmen and detained six more in a security crackdown in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, the Multi-National Forces in southern Iraq said on Saturday.

Baghdad- Iraqi security forces killed one gunman and arrested 106 suspected militants in several areas in Baghdad during the past 48 hours under the Baghdad law-imposing plan, the Baghdad operations command said on Saturday.

Baghdad- At least one civilian was killed and nine others were wounded on Saturday evening in a blast in central Baghdad, a police source said.

Baghdad– Nine people were killed and 13 others were wounded in western Baghdad on Saturday when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive belt near a group of recruits seeking to join the Iraqi police, a security source said.

Diala– Five civilians were killed and dozens of families were forced to leave their homes due to armed clashes that erupted from the early hours of Saturday between gunmen and villages in al-Sanqar and Theilab in western Habhab, Diala province, local residents said.
