Security Summary: May 13, 2007

Children collect bullet shells following an attack in the Sadr City area of Baghdad today. Reuters reports that Iraqi police said a U.S. military helicopter opened fire at a family sleeping on their rooftop, killing a mother and two children and injuring two other children.

Mosul- Unknown gunmen killed on Sunday two former senior members of the now-dissolved Baath party in two separate incidents in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, while a Mosul morgue received today five bodies, four of them were unidentified, a police source said.

Diwaniya- Iraqi forces detained on Sunday afternoon a leading figure from Sadr movement along with four of his brothers in the Shiite city of Diwaniya, 180 km south of Baghdad, a police source said.

Diala- Baaquba hospital received on Sunday eight unidentified bodies, three of them were headless, a medical source said.

Baghdad– Thirty-five suspected gunmen were arrested in raids conducted by the U.S. army in the area of al-Tarmiyah, northern Baghdad, and Falluja, Anbar province, the U.S. army announced on Sunday.

Baghdad– Five workers were killed and four others wounded in an attack by gunmen on a factory in southern Baghdad on Sunday, an Iraqi interior ministry source said.

Baghdad – U.S. forces in southeastern Baghdad killed one man and arrested three suspected members of a "terrorist" cell, the U.S. army said.

Arbil – A car rigged with explosives blew up near the headquarters of Iraqi Kurdistan Region's President Massoud Barazani's Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in the district of Makhmor, northeastern Ninawa province, killing 32 and wounding 115 others, Iraq's health minister said.

Kut – Unidentified gunmen attacked the house of a policeman in Kut using an explosive charge, wounding two of the policeman's family, an Iraqi police source in Wassit province said, adding that two unidentified bodies were found in the northwestern district of al-Numaniya.

Baghdad – Iraqi security forces killed seven gunmen and arrested 111 suspected militants in several areas of Baghdad during the past 24 hours under the Baghdad law-imposing plan, the Baghdad operations command said.

Baghdad – An Iraqi police source said that 12 people were killed and 41 others were wounded when a roadside vehicle rigged with explosives went off in the central Baghdad square of al-Wathba on Sunday.

Baghdad – An Iraqi explosives expert managed to defuse a truck bomb in the neighborhood of Ur, eastern Baghdad, the Iraqi police said.

Kirkuk – One civilian was killed and another wounded when Katyusha missiles fell on residential neighborhoods in Kirkuk, 250 km north of Baghdad, an official security source from Kirkuk police said.

Baghdad – William Caldwell, the military spokesman for the Multi-National Forces (MNF) in Iraq, said the Fardh al-Qanoon security plan was not thoroughly implemented because the U.S. forces needed to upgrade the plan had not yet arrived in Iraq.

Baghdad – A joint operations command to enhance security in Diala will be formed, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said.

Basra – Iraqi and MNF forces arrested six suspected militants in a raid in western Basra, the military spokeswoman for the MNF in southern Iraq said, adding a British armored vehicle was destroyed in an explosive charge attack in the northern part of the city.

Baaquba – Four people were killed and five others wounded when two explosive devices went off in separate explosions in northeastern Baaquba, Diala province, an Iraqi police source said.

Najaf – At least four policemen were wounded when an explosive charge went off in the holy Shiite province of Najaf, an Iraqi security source said.
