Perspective: Slain soldier’s puppy brought to U.S.

CONCORD, N.H. — The night before Army Spc. Justin Rollins was killed by a roadside bomb, he and some other soldiers found a litter of newborn puppies outside an Iraqi police station. Someone snapped a photo of him nuzzling a female pup.

Ever since his death March 5 in Samarra, Iraq, Rollins’ family has longed to bring Hero the dog to the U.S. On Friday, they got their wish.

“It was the last bit of happiness Justin had,” said Rollins’ girlfriend, Brittney Murray.

Rollins’ parents, Mitchell and Rhonda Rollins, said their son always loved animals.
