Michael W. Davis dies of 'wounds suffered when multiple improvised explosive devices detonated near his vehicle'

Family and friends mourned the death of Army Spc. Michael W. Davis of San Marcos: a husband, a son and a fallen hero.

The Pentagon confirmed Davis was one of three U.S. troops killed when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Baghdad, Iraq, Monday.

Davis and the others were serving from Fort Richardson, Alaska.

This wasn't the first time the city lost one of its citizens to war, and the mayor said it never gets easier.

"It's always devastating to hear of someone losing their life even though they believe they're doing what's right in their minds," said San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz. "It's a sad situation for a family."

Davis is a former San Marcos High School student and was a member of the class of 2002.

Residents said he married his high school sweetheart.

Narvaiz said she's talked with the family.

"I hope the public will allow them to gather their loved ones around, so they can come to terms with what's happened to them," Narvaiz said. "They asked me to help facilitate a few things, which I'm in the process of doing."

Narvaiz said Davis will be memorialized, but plans have not been finalized.
