Security Summary: April 2, 2007

A newly released prisoner holds the Koran at a central bus station in Baghdad, one of 50 detainees released from Buca prison in Basra and dropped off at Baghdad's central bus station today.

BASRA - Two British soldiers were wounded when their patrol came under fire in Basra, British military spokesman Major David Gell said. The extent of their wounds was not clear.

BAGHDAD - Five Iraqi soldiers were wounded when their patrol was the target of a roadside bomb in the Baghdad district of Adhamiya, near the Sunni Abu Hanifa mosque.

KIRKUK - A truck bomb killed 12 people and wounded around 150 in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, police said.

KHALIS - A suicide bomber killed three people and wounded 20 when he detonated his explosive belt near a popular restaurant in the town of Khalis, 80 km (50 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

NEAR BAQUBA - The bodies of 21 men, including 19 who were kidnapped by gunmen at a fake checkpoint near Baquba on Sunday, were found bound and shot in the head and chest, Iraqi police and hospital sources said.

DOUR - Iraqi and U.S. forces arrested at least 50 suspected insurgents, including the mayor of Dour, during an operation in the town that began on Saturday, the U.S. military said during a news conference in Tikrit. Dour is near Tikrit, 175 km (110 miles) north of Baghdad.

BAGHDAD - A suicide car bomber rammed his vehicle into an Iraqi police checkpoint, killing two people and wounding five in the Doura district of southern Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD - A car bomb killed two people and wounded nine in the southern Bayaa district of Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD - The motorcade of the deputy Interior Ministry for police affairs came under fire near al-Nidaa mosque in northern Baghdad, police said. He was unharmed but two of his guards were seriously wounded. Another police source said he was not present at the time of the incident.

RAMADI - Police arrested two members of al-Qaeda in Iraq and discovered a weapons cache in the Sunni stronghold of Ramadi, 110 km (70 miles) west of Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD - Mortar rounds landed in different districts of Baghdad on Sunday, killing one person and wounding 20, police said.

LATIFIYA - Police captured nine suspected insurgents in an operation on Sunday in the town of Latifiya, 40 km (25 miles) south of Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

BAGHDAD - Police found 16 bodies in Baghdad on Sunday.
