A teacher surveys a classroom after a rocket landed at a schoolyard in eastern Baghdad, killing a 6-year-old boy and wounding 17 others today.

MUQDADIYA - A suicide bomber targeting police recruits outside a police station killed 17 and wounded 33, including three civilians, in the town of Muqdadiya, 90 km (50 miles) northeast of Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD - A car bomb at an intersection near Baghdad University in the southern part of the capital killed five people and wounded 11, police said.

BAGHDAD - At least 10 people were killed in clashes between gunmen and Iraqi and U.S. forces in central Baghdad, police said. The U.S. military said two helicopters were hit by small arms fire but returned to base safely. Residents said they saw helicopters rocket buildings where gunmen were holed up.

BASRA - British troops opened fire on gunmen after coming under attack during a search operation in the volatile southern city of Basra. A British military spokesman said at least two gunmen were hit. A policeman was also killed in the fighting.

DIWANIYA - A four-day-old curfew was lifted in the southern city of Diwaniya, 180 km (110 miles) south of Baghdad, where Iraqi and U.S. forces have been battling gunmen in an operation to drive the Mehdi Army militia out of the city.

BAGHDAD - Three American soldiers were killed and one was wounded when a roadside bomb exploded near their patrol in Baghdad on Monday, the U.S. military said.

BAGHDAD - The bodies of nine people were found shot on Monday in different districts of Baghdad, police said.

BAGHDAD - A mortar round landed on a boys' secondary school in Palestine Street in northern Baghdad, killing one boy and wounding 10 others.

BAGHDAD - Several mortar rounds landed in three districts in southern Baghdad on Monday, killing one person and wounding four, police said.

MOSUL - The bodies of three people were found with bullet wounds on Monday in Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

NEAR KIRKUK - The bodies of two people were found shot and tortured in Rashad, a town near Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.
