GAO: At $15 billion, Air Force has twice the spare parts needed

The Air Force has too many spare parts, and they’re worth about $15 billion, the Government Accountability Office found.

In a report issued April 27, the GAO, Congress’ watchdog agency, found that more than half of the service’s spare parts inventory was not needed to support required supply levels...

Not surprisingly, the Air Force takes issue with the GAO’s conclusion. In their response to the GAO, the Air Force and the Defense Department claim about 20 percent of the spare parts were overstocked, not the 50 percent claimed by the GAO. Their response also says that the military and the GAO use different definitions to define how many parts are needed.
