Perspective: At Fort Richardson, deaths hit home

Last fall's deployment ceremony at 'Fort Rich'.

With the force of a knockout punch, the war has hit home.

All week long, in relentless fashion, shock and awe came this way. Tuesday brought news that eight soldiers from Fort Richardson had been killed on a single day over the weekend. Wednesday brought news of another death.

Then came Friday and the one-two emotional punch of a memorial service for five dead soldiers and a Purple Heart ceremony for four wounded ones.

Around the same time those ceremonies were happening at Fort Rich, reports were surfacing that four of last weekend's dead had not been killed in an ambush as the Army initially said and continued to say all week. They had been abducted and executed.
