Matthew Tyler Grimm dies of injuries from I.E.D.
For the second time in two months, a local serviceman has died while serving in Iraq.
Matthew Tyler Grimm, 21, died from injuries sustained when the humvee he was riding in was struck by a roadside bomb, according to Grimm’s mother Jean Grimm.
Grimm, a 2004 Lincoln High School graduate, was serving in C-Company, 2-7 Cavalry based out of Fort Bliss, Texas. He joined the Army out of high school and was sent to Iraq in late October of last year.
“He was in the tank division, but they put him in artillery as soon as he got over there,” Jean Grimm said. “He was in Mosul and then just a week ago he had moved to another camp and he was not allowed to say where it was.”
Lance Cpl. Jesse D. Tillery, 19, of Vesper, died Dec. 2, 2006 while conducting combat operations in Iraq. He was a member of the 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Expeditionary Force based in Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Grimm said representatives from the Army were meeting with her Tuesday to schedule arrangements for her son. Matthew’s brother, Andrew, 23, who is also serving in Iraq, is also on his way home.
The Rev. Tammie Rinker of the Wisconsin Rapids Moravian Church, 310 1st Ave. S., said the Grimm was both baptized and confirmed at her church.
“He was active in our Sunday school for a number of years,” she said.
Rinker said as soon as her church heard of Grimm’s death, the news was sent through their prayer chain to inform the rest of the congregation.
On Monday, The Department of Defense released a statement about four Task Force Lightning Soldiers assigned to the 4th Brigade, 1st Cavalry division killed Monday as a result of an improvised explosive device while conducting operations in Ninewa province, Iraq. The 2-7 Cavalry, is under the command of the 1st Cavalry division.
