Brent W. Dunkleberger dies of injuries from rocket-propelled grenade
Perry County soldier Brent Dunkleberger, 28, who grew up in New Bloomfield, has died in Iraq.
His parents, Sue and Bill Dunkleberger, who live in Elliotsburg, just outside New Bloomfield, were notified of their son's passing last night, says Lynn Van Leaven, director of veterans affairs for Perry County.
The military is not releasing any details of the death, Van Leaven says.
Dunkleberger, who was stationed at Fort Hood in Texas, was on his second tour in Iraq.
Van Leaven visited his parents in their home this morning. They are in "deep mourning" and have chosen not to speak to the press, she explains, but they will choose a spokesperson to speak on their behalf soon.
Dunkleberger and his wife, Lisa, have lived in Texas since he was stationed there. The couple has three children, says Perry County Treasurer Margaret Bolton, who works with Dunkleberger's mother, Sue.
The soldier's mother has been a deputy treasurer for the county for many years. Dunkleberger's father Bill works at Perry County Automotive in New Bloomfield. His sister lives in the New Bloomfield area with her husband and four kids, friends of the family say.
Bolton says the parents of Dunkleberger's wife live somewhere in Cumberland County.
