Joseph M. Kane killed by I.E.D.
Staff Sgt. Joseph Kane, 35, was one of three soldiers killed outside Baghdad Oct. 14 when a roadside bomb detonated near their Humvee.
Kane was nearing the end of his second tour of duty in Iraq.
Though the Army listed his hometown as Darby, Pa., his wife, Michelle, is from Belfair. The couple married in 1998 while he was stationed at Fort Lewis, according to information provided by Rill's Life Tribute Center in Port Orchard.
He was deployed with the 4th Infantry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas -- the same division as Pfc. Devon Gibbons, the Port Orchard soldier who died June 23 from wounds suffered 10 weeks earlier in Iraq.
Kane is at least the fifth person with a local connection to die in the Iraq war.
He is survived by his wife and three children, as well as his parents and extended family in Pennsylvania. A memorial account has been established at Kitsap Credit Union to benefit the children.
Kane will be buried with full military honors at Sunset Lane Memorial Park in Port Orchard. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Belfair Assembly of God Church in Belfair.
