Voting a tricky mission for troops waiting for ballots in battlefield
WASHINGTON — Election year after election year, tens of thousands of overseas voters fail to complete the time-consuming process of registering to vote, requesting a ballot, receiving it and mailing it back before polls close. As a result, their votes aren't counted.
Pentagon officials say the situation is particularly troublesome for troops in battle, who often are redeployed before mail reaches them. Michael Dominguez, principal deputy undersecretary of Defense for personnel and readiness, calls it "the special challenge of reaching the deployed warrior on the battlefield."
