Marine killed in 2003 to be honored today (Mark Evnin)
Family and friends will dedicate Pride Rock in South Burlington's Jaycee Park today to the memory of Mark Asher Evnin, a Marine corporal killed in Iraq in 2003.
Mark Evnin, a Marine corporal from South Burlington who was killed in Iraq in 2003, will be honored today when the coach and former players from his football team unveil a plaque bearing his name.
Evnin, an only child, was 21 when he was killed. Today, former and current football players, friends and family will gather to remember him at the Pride Rock at Jaycee Park.
In addition to his name, rank and date of death, the plaque will read, "He freely gave his life for something larger than himself," a quote from his mother, Mindy.
Evnin played on the Dolphin youth football league under coach Rene LaBerge. He was a lineman and played for the Dolphins in 1993, before going on to play for South Burlington High School, LaBerge said.
