Fallen Soldier Laid to Rest (Wakkuna Jackson)

Wakkuna Jackson died while serving in Iraq. She joined the army after graduating from Stanton college prep to save for med school.

Sergeant Charles Bartell was the only person serving with Jackson in Afghanistan who was able to make it to her funeral on the Northside today. He says, "I got a call across the radio that we needed bags---for what we thought were Afghani's...what came across the radio was wrong…all I could say was 'no'."

Sgt. Bartell was there the day Jackson died supporting operation enduring freedom in Afghanistan. A roadside bomb killed Jackson and two other servicemen on August 19th. Two weeks later---dozens of family, friends, fellow servicemen, and Stanton alumni can't say enough about what kind of a person she was. Jackson’s father Sherman Jackson says, "she had a great feeling toward people---she was very compassionate toward people."

Jackson’s passion for helping others didn’t just start when she enlisted…in fact---when she was seventeen, she cut off her hair, and donated it to a local cancer society. Her father says, "she never thought twice about it---she would do anything---she wouldn’t think anything about it just like that was what she was born to do."
